Sunday Forum: Holden Village Copper Mine Remediation
January 5, 2020 / 9:00 am –9:50 am CST
Join us as Kim Bretheim and daughter Laura Bretheim share their observations about the copper mine remediation that has been taking place at Holden Village, a Lutheran retreat center outside Chelan, Washington. Laura worked at Holden for some time and her family has been frequent visitors there. Holden Village occupies what was once a working copper mine. The Holden Mine Cleanup Project is a $200+ million multi-year effort to remediate past environmental problems at the mine. The mine has been closed since the late 1950s and the cleanup was necessary to prevent future water and soil contamination. Kim and Laura’s presentation has local implications too, in light of the discussion about opening copper mining in the Boundary Waters of Minnesota. The public is invited to attend. Coffee and treats will be served.
