Sacred Sites Tour

June 1 / 10:00 am 2:00 pm CDT

Join the NHLC Racial Justice team for a tour of three Indigenous sacred sites in and around Fort Snelling.

A Land Acknowledgment Statement was adopted in the fall of 2022 by Nokomis Heights Lutheran Church that recognized and lifted up the Native American groups who previously lived on the land now occupied by the church. To help us better understand the reasons for the adoption of this statement, we have scheduled another Healing Minnesota Stories—Sacred Sites Tour

The tour is part of Healing Minnesota Stories, sponsored by the Minnesota Council of Churches (MCC), an effort to create understanding and healing between Native American and non-Native people. Generations of Native people have suffered deep trauma from loss of land, language, and culture—and all who call Minnesota home are the lesser for it. As communities of faith, we can play a key role in the healing process.

The Sacred Sites Tour offers an opportunity to learn about Minnesota history from a Native perspective through storytelling and experiencing the sites in silence/meditation/reflection. Tours are led by Rev. Jim Bear Jacobs (Mohican) and Dr. Kelly Sherman-Conroy (Oglala Lakota).

There is a $30 per person charge (but please don’t let that stop you from participating). The group is limited to 50 people. The tour will meet at the Church of St. Peter, 1405 Sibley Memorial Highway, in Mendota Heights. We will try to arrange some carpooling from Nokomis Heights.

Please join us! Register today! Sign up by contacting the church office.
