Earth Week Postcard Project
April 24, 2021 / 10:00 am – 11:00 am CDT
It’s Earth Week! Join the NHLC Creation Care Team out on our front lawn for an advocacy event on behalf of Creation!
The fossil fuel industry receives about $15 billion per year in federal subsidies, an amount that outweighs federal support for renewable energy. In 2020, Representative Ilhan Omar (who represents the neighborhood around our church) introduced a bill to end taxpayer-funded subsidies for the oil, gas, and coal industries. The bill received co-sponsorships from fifteen other US Representatives, but failed to make it out of legislative committees in time for a floor vote. Since no action was taken, we’re trying again! Come help us write letters to Congress to ask for the removal of tax breaks and subsidies to the fossil fuel industry.
The NHLC Creation Care Team invites you to join in with members of our committee at the church at 10:00 am, Saturday, April 24, to receive a short briefing on the contents of the proposed legislation. We will be masked and socially-distanced, and weather permitting we will meet outside on the lawn.
People who choose to do so may write postcards to Representative Omar thanking her for drafting this legislation, and asking her to introduce it to Congress again this year. We will provide the postcards, stamps, and addresses of our various congressional representatives (for those of us who live outside Omar’s district), asking these representatives to become co-sponsors of the bill). We’ll be done by 10:30, and weather permitting, may enjoy a walk together to a local mailbox.
